Can I Install Artificial Grass Myself?

Artificial grass is the perfect DIY project for your backyard! Immerse yourself in planning and creating your outdoor oasis this summer by opting to install artificial turf yourself! Furthermore, you’ll significantly cut down on your project’s overall cost as installation is priced anywhere from $4 to $8 per square foot depending on the property.

Those worried about the quality of the install can check out our comprehensive 3-D installation guide. In our installation guide, we provide the necessary steps you’ll need in order to properly install your artificial grass. The process you’ll need to undergo depends on many factors. Large areas, unusual shapes, or different application methods may be trickier to install than a regular, rectangular backyard.

Below are a few general suggestions we recommend for artificial turf installation:

   1- Subbase Installation

It is important to create a proper subbase as this will ensure the longevity of your artificial turf. A subbase establishes effective drainage, prevents weed growth as well as loose areas/corners. We recommend excavating 4 to 6 inches deep. Furthermore, we recommend two layers of our commercial geotextile if weeds are an issue. Our commercial grade weed barrier will prevent any weed growth from occurring on your property. You’ll need one layer beneath and one layer on top of the ¼ crushed stone.

Afterwards, you’ll need to use our 8’’ non-galvanized nails for the perimeter of your artificial turf. We recommend every 6’’ around the perimeter. If you need to bond any pieces together, SGC seaming tape will do the trick! Our self-adhesive seaming tape guarantees a mess free installation.

   2- Concrete Installation

There are many factors to consider prior to installing artificial turf onto concrete. Your concrete surface must be relatively flat with proper drainage. If your concrete is uneven, you many use our EzPads to level the surface area. These foam pads come in various thicknesses: 10mm, 25mm, and 45mm.

You will need to use our artificial grass glue to adhere the artificial turf onto the concrete. Our commercial grade outdoor artificial grass glue will dry within 20-30 minutes. The installation won’t be ruined if the turf glue gets into contact with water. Be mindful that the fibers don’t get caught up in the glue. Finally, you will need to use our commercial seam tape to bond artificial grass pieces together.
